Of the Reformation, specialists are unanimous: It could have occurred without Philipp Melanchthon. A powerful"right-handed guy", Melanchthon was Luther's closest friend and favored intellectual sparring partner. Fiercely intelligent, he also attended Heidelberg University at age 12 and went on to examine everything from math and law to philosophy and astronomy. From the time he was 21, he'd already published several works, such as a guide to Greek Bible (1518). Obviously quite taken together with the Greek speech, he changed his name"Schwartzerdt" ('black earth') into the Greek equal: Melanchthon.
Despite a 14-year gap in age, the two formed a quick and bail bond. Even though Melanchthon's lectures frequently drew 600 pupils at one time, he had been understood to become less charismatic than Luther; nonetheless he had been more organized than his mentor, that would be spontaneous and emotional. In a time when Christianity was in chaos, Melanchthon remained cool, cool, and collected, preferring motive to fire and constantly searching for regions of agreement with fellow Christians.
When Luther was known as Augsburg in 1530 to shield his controversial teachings, it had been Melanchthon who drew up the so-called Augsburg Confession. Of the 28 posts of Lutheran religion, the initial 21 affirm the bases of Lutheranism, although the previous seven pinpoint the significant differences between Lutheranism and the Roman Catholic Church. Sixteen decades later, Melanchthon headed the German Reformation motion after Luther's death. Ever the conciliator, he hunted for common ground after Lutherans were defeated in the Battle of Muehlberg at 1547. His concessions contributed hardline Lutherans to denounce him as a traitor. He's also famous for reforming the German education system. Philipp Melanchthon expired in Lutherstadt Wittenberg at 1560 and was buried alongside Martin Luther, decided to stay at his side in passing.
